3 Quick and Natural Ways to Reduce Inflammation

How easy it is to suffer from inflammation! It could happen in the instant you harm yourself or come on slowly due to a chronic infection or poor dietary choices, but there are certain times when parts of your body get inflamed, causing redness and pain.

In today’s article, we want to explore some of the simple and natural ways you can relieve inflammation quickly and while at home.

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is the means by which your body responds to a pathogen, irritant, or physical blow. In other words, inflammation is one of your body’s defense mechanisms.

Some of the characteristics of inflammation include redness in a particular region, swelling, pain, fever, and other related issues.

Some medical sources refer to inflammation as a “fiery” sensation precisely due to the characteristics mentioned above. But when it becomes chronic, the inflamed area might be cooler to the touch and no longer appear swollen.

This article will focus on the kind of inflammation that feels hot to the touch with accompanying redness, pain, and swelling.

When should you use these treatments to reduce inflammation?

• Right after an impact, when no open wound is present
• In any area where you suffer from chronic pain, particularly in the back or joints
• In the neck, as a result of an infection of the throat
• Over the region of your liver (right side near the rib cage) when you feel pain or congestion. In this case, we don’t recommend using the ice therapy, but one of the other two we’re about to describe
• Around the abdomen, if it feels swollen or you suffer from a particular disorder

Ice therapy

As we mentioned above, heat is the main feature of most inflammations, so we’ll use one of the oldest and simplest remedies to treat it: ice.

Remember not to apply ice directly to your bare skin, and instead choose one of the following options:

• A bag of frozen peas or something similar
• A handful of ice cubes folded into a cloth
• A special bag marketed for this purpose

Apply the ice to the affected area for at least 20 minutes.

Chronic inflammation typically won’t feel warm to the touch, and can, in fact, be cooler than the rest of your skin. In these cases, it’s best to apply heat (water bottle, heating pad, etc.) to make it more relaxing and soothing.

Clay and turmeric

Clay is another old remedy for inflammation because mud has been readily available for therapies for centuries (and for free).

Today it’s a safer bet to use clean clay powder, which you can find at any herbalist or health food store.

Mix it with a little water, enough to make a paste that’s easy to apply but not so wet that it’s dripping.

Whenever you use clay, it’s important to avoid mixing it with plastic or metal utensils, as they can leach out some of its beneficial properties. Instead, always use glass, wood, or ceramic.

Apply the clay to the area that’s inflamed and allow it to dry.

To further enhance the effects of clay against inflammation, we recommend adding a little turmeric powder to the mixture because, in addition to fighting inflammation, it also alleviates pain.

Cabbage compress

Let’s continue with some more inexpensive, homemade treatments with this one that’s based on cabbage. Cabbage helps reduce inflammation every time you eat it. But you can also apply this vegetable to your skin to get the same benefits.

You’ll need two to three of the outer leaves of a head of green cabbage.

How should you make it?

• Bring a small amount of water to a boil.
• Once it’s boiling, dip the leaves in the water two or three times so that they’re slightly scalded, but not cooked. Mash them using a mortar and pestle.
• Apply the mashed cabbage leaves to the inflamed area before covering with a cloth and plastic wrap.
• Leave this cabbage compress on for at least half an hour.
